In November 2018, three CPI cities in Sumatera Utara experienced
deflation, namely Sibolga by 0.28 percent; Pematangsiantar by 0.01
percent; Medan is 0.64 percent, while Padangsidimpuan inflation is 0.50
percent. Accordingly, the combined 4 CPI cities in Sumatera Utara in November 2018 were deflation of 0.51 percent.

In November 2018, Medan deflation of 0.64 percent or a decrease in the
index from 139.26 in October 2018 to 138.37 in November 2018. Deflation
occurs due to a decrease in prices indicated by a decrease in the index
of three expenditure groups, namely groups food ingredients 3.30
percent; clothing group by 0.24 percent; and the health group by 0.10
percent. Meanwhile, the group that experienced an increase in index,
namely the processed food, beverages, cigarettes and tobacco group by
0.06 percent; housing, water, electricity, gas and fuel group by 0,20
percent; the education, recreation and sports group by 0.04 percent; and
the transportation, communication and financial services group by 0.68
percent.

The main commodities contributing to deflation during November 2018 in
Medan included red chili, cayenne pepper, dresses / canals, suits, beef,
green chili, and granulated sugar.

Of the 23 CPI cities in Sumatra Island 17 cities experienced inflation.
The highest inflation occurred in Banda Aceh by 0.92 percent with CPI
of 128.18 and the lowest occurred in Meulaboh by 0.08 percent with CPI
of 132.45. Meanwhile, the highest deflation occurred in Medan at 0.64
with an CPI of 138.37.
